The deposit matters
Creosote is a flammable byproduct of wood burning. Deposits can range from loose material to hard or glazed buildup. A chimney professional should assess the condition and choose an appropriate removal method.
The Chimney Safety Institute of America explains that some deposits need treatment beyond ordinary brushing. Chemical cleaning products are not a replacement for professional inspection and sweeping.
Ask what the description means
If your report uses a term such as stage, level or glaze, ask the technician to explain what it means for your chimney. Request photos, the location of the finding and a clear description of the proposed work. Avoid treating a label alone as a complete quote.
Separate cleaning from repairs
Ask which charges cover removing deposits, which cover inspection and which cover repairs. Have the contractor explain whether the fireplace can be used before that work is complete. Do not try to burn away a suspected deposit.
Plan the next visit
CSIA recommends annual chimney inspections and cleaning when needed. Use well-seasoned wood suited to your appliance and follow its operating instructions.
Keep the inspection report with your home records. Note the contractor’s contact details and the next maintenance recommendation, so you can explain the history at a future appointment.
